[CreateSpace] PDF transfer problems

Post by skier » Wed Aug 08, 2018 6:49 pm

Createspace
Hi,
This is my first book. I am French from Canada. I wrote my book in French and had it translated to English.
So far so good… I cannot spend a lot of money on publishing.
I saw a Youtube recently on self-publishing and it sounded so logical and kind of… easy!!!
OMG…….
I registered with Createspace. Remember, I'm French… So I had to read and re-read and re-read… and finally uploaded my English version as a doc.It was amazingly easy, even transferred my pictures. I know….. I read later that it should be in pdf…
So today,I saved my doc to a pdf, then dowloaded a new formatted template from createspace.
Not good.
I transferred a paragraph at a time, because I had this little coloured wheel turning in my pdf, it would not transfer faster.
Then when I looked at the transferred paragraph, the format was all wrong. The paragraphs were all cut. I had to manually realign everything. Did it for one paragraph, and decided to stop. I am doing something wrong. What do you think is happening? I think it's my pdf… I opened my document in Word and saved it as a pdf, nothing fancier.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Although I use the templates from CS all the time, many folks are unsuccessful with them. They are very delicate and full of glitches if mishandled.
If you say you did your original manuscript in Word, then produced a pdf from that, why are you then going back to the template? If you like the formatting of the original and are satisfied with the pdf, that will suffice for CreateSpace. Trying to go back to Word from a PDf, especially to the template is a bad way to go. Unless I am not understanding the problem?
Joe.

It sounds like you started with an MS Word .doc, saved it to PDF, then tried to copy-paste the PDF content into a new MS Word template? This is completely unnecessary. Does the PDF look like you want the final printed book to look? If so, upload that. There is no reason to use a CreateSpace template if you've already got a PDF that looks as you want it, including matching your chosen trim size.

Please correct me if I've misunderstood what you're trying to do.

I am one of the people who has had troubles with the CS interior templates from the day they were introduced. I've posted about the problems often and for years. They were ill conceived, but have gotten a tad better. I do not doubt that they work for most people, but as Phoenix says, "are very delicate and full of glitches if mishandled" . . . I might take exception to the word "mishandled."

When you are working in Word especially, save your files often. Also: at least once a day, save the file then open in and save it as a new file. I rename them: my_book_rev001.doc, my_book_rev002.doc, my_book_rev003.doc . . . Sometimes I will add to the title something informative, like "...rev004headers" or "...rev005pagination" so that I know if something went funny, where to go back to, or what might have gone wrong.

Coming here to criticise other members of the forum with your lofty views is not in the least bit helpful or within the spirit of the forum. Offering to assist/teach while slinging insults is hardly conducive to a healthy atmosphere of camaraderie and learning among fellow writers and publishers. You are always entitled to an opinion, but it should not be aimed squarely at another member(ie; the OP). If you wish to make a separate post on the downfalls of the Indie publishing industry, you are free to do so.
Suggesting that anyone using a formatted template is adding to the dross on the internet is a distasteful and foolish comment. The whole reason that Amazon is so successful is that they do not hire gatekeepers to sift through the material on offer unless it breaks TOS like pornography and such. The worst of the material, the dross, will eventually sink to the bottom where it will most likely remain. If your works are being tainted by the quality of your fellow Indie authors, perhaps you would do better to seek a traditional publisher rather than attempt to force your standards on others?
This is not a venue to sling mud at fellow forum members. Kindly adjust your attitude.

I will ask both of you to please stop, or I will delete both of your comments on this thread.

This forum is a safe place for self-publishers and independent authors to ask questions and seek advice. The last several comments from both of you have been counter-productive to this goal the original question on this thread. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but the recent posts are not in line with the reasons for the creation of this forum. Please stop now.

BL Alley, WTF is wrong with you, posting things like "dafgsadfgdfg"? And you consider yourself a "mature" enough person to be a moderator of this forum? I myself feel rather childish about my complaints in the Staff corner sometimes, but at least I don't do crap like that. I have no idea how you got to be a moderator, I was not asked for an opinion on making you one, but from some of your recent posts on the CS forum that sound very critical and immature, I would have voted against making you one.

Sarah . . . there are Skier (the OP), Phoenix, and me. What did I say? ["I will ask both of you to please stop, or I will delete both of your comments on this thread."] I've been preoccupied with a 24-Hour Play production and post-play recovery, and have not followed this thread until today.

Walton - it's because BL Alley came in and deleted EVERY SINGLE ONE of his posts in this thread, possibly in the entire forum, and he took such offense that I have noted that he suddenly stopped posting in the CS forums too! He made some VERY immature comments in this thread, the example I gave in my post is one of them.

You should be able to see what's been going on in the moderator logs.
