[spam] how to deal

Post by Ozed » Sun Jun 18, 2017 4:16 am

I notice the odd spam sneaks through but can't see any method of reporting or marking or whatever. Do we have to leave it all to the mods? Not really fair especially as it's summertime in Alaska!

Cheers. Ed

I just deleted a SPAM, despite it being summer here in Alaska. I went to ban the member who posted it and my board showed that he/she/it is already in the process of being banned.

Walton, do you have any idea how long it takes for the actual banning to take place, is it a "couple of hours" process, or is it a "couple of days" process?

Usually Sarah gets here well before me, no matter when I log in. She usually bans them. The ban is instant. If, when I get here, I see their truncated posts, I can remove them completely. That too happens instantly.

When we go in and ban or purge members, it happens as soon as the submit button is clicked and confirmed.

We've had quite a few today, for some reason. I squash 'em when I see 'em. But there's a pattern in the usernames, Walton, that I think we may want to consider just banning before they have the chance.

kksiefai kssieysc kksiexiu krsieeff ktsieyfv kwsieuvd kksietjk kksiemot kgsieeiq . . . I don't know if I could preemptively block the next name.

I'll see if I can find any information . . . I'm still looking for a better captcha method.

No, I mean ban all those current usernames that are obviously following the pattern, before they have a chance to post spam. I guess that's still just a catch-up option, rather than preventative.

I'll have to double check, but I think the option I'm using prevents anything re-registration from either that email address or that user name. If that is not the case, I know that option exists.

Is there a way to make banned members disappear from the "members" list?

My screen shows we have 164 users (7 pages and yesterday I think there were only 4 pages - the spammers have found us!

I think we've deleted/banned everyone who has spammed. I didn't discover pruning the membership until a week or two ago, so some name may have lingered. I got rid of 26 names just now . . .

Let me know if this makes things look different.

I've only seen a few spams a day. I don't think that's bad. The CS forum is constant spam . . . I hate their solutions: only a few boards, a search feature that now doesn't work (it apparently worked for CustomerService, but it doesn't for me on 2 computers and with 5 browsers), over zealous moderators, when they are awake: Not only did I have a post moderated (I reposted it here: [CS Quality Control] Where was the book printed?) when it was finally approved, the image had been removed!

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that we are not dealing with bots where all the spam is concerned. I believe some very cheap labour is involved that can circumvent the capcha process. Like the click farms I hear so much about, I believe humans are responsible for all the spam that we see invading every forum. What they hope to achieve is just beyond me. I have never been tempted to follow a link, nor do I find the content in the least bit interesting. I'm certain most others feel the same. Surely they are not successful with their campaigns?
Joe.
