[KDP] Converting for kindle.

Post by Ozed » Sun Jun 18, 2017 4:12 am

Walton you said that you wanted more questions but this may not be what you had in mind, but it is a step up from teach me how to copy and paste.

I am struggling with converting my latest effort for kindle. Have tried the simple method in OO of save as HTML and whilst the body of the book is fine, the front pages are not aligned centrally and some of the images have just disappeared. Walton I seem to recall a post of yours not too long ago giving a fairly simple process using calibrate, but can't find it on CS. Would you mind repeating it here?.

Cheers. Ed

Ed,

I'm going to outline my basic ebook conversions steps for you. This is the quick convert method I usually have people do if they are not looking for a full professional format conversion. It seems to work well for most people and offers the ability to make large scale format changes and tweaks for those that want to dig into the code.

1) Save manuscript to HTML (filtered HTML if using word)
2)Zip the HTML and subfolder
3)Open Zip file with Calibre and convert to epub (remember to setup your metadata)
4)Open the epub with Sigil to tweak the file and correctly add a NXC TOC

I tend to upload the epub file to kindle and let them convert on simple text based projects but on anything more complex you will want to convert the epub to mobi etc with Calibre before uploading.

Hope it helps

I don't have time to respond, I've got a rehearsal to go to. But I thought I'd welcome RC . . .

R.C. I do something similar, but when I create (from Word) the filtered HTML file, I then turn it immediately into a zip file and drag the photos onto that file. I then send the resulting ZIP to Amazon as the kindle file. Never had a problem, so far.

[KDP] Converting for kindle

Post by HanPoica » Fri Jul 14, 2017 10:33 am

I recently published my print book on Amazon. I am now doing various ebook versions, starting with Kindle. Google books is next I reckon

I saved the file as a epub and MOBI file but when I use the KDP previewer - the resulting text looks different. Does the MOBI format not
support TABS?

What is the best way forward?

Thanks

No. Mobi and ePub are based on HTML, which doesn't recognize tabs. If your source file (your original manuscript) is in something like MS Word, you must use paragraph styles to define such things as indents.

Ebooks don't have tabs, as has been pointed out. Tabs are evil, etc, so strip 'em out before even starting conversion. In fact, just don't use them.

David, I believe the post above yours is spam (it doesn't seem to have anything to do with ebooks), but it's not overt enough for me to delete it. But it resurrected a rather old thread for no reason. :)
