Re: [SPAM] Strategy . . . Comments Wanted

I just came in here this morning and found more than 25 spams - all submitted by a mere 4 users. I banned all 4 of them and deleted their posts.

I am getting more and more frustrated as it appears that you (Walton) come in here only about once a week. You did not bother to answer my question, you did not bother to comment on Michelle's suggestions (in the staff room thread).

Then, you came in and made this suggestion - several days ago now. Several people, including myself, have attempted to answer your question - no response at all from you. What gives?

Let me check on moderating first posts.

I went in to delete all inactive accounts . . . and the last one, from many months ago, was a currently active member, whose ID I recognize.

So maybe this wasn't a great idea!

Yes, Joe, you are so correct. I deleted the 2 spam posts above yours and I banned the member.

WALTON:
Let's take Joe up on his offer to help out here. Now, with the spam increasing every day, we need more help.

I just spent more than 30 minutes deleting over 2 pages of spam and banning the folks who posted those spams. It is obvious to me that no other moderators have been in here since yesterday morning. I will not spend my time deleting 2 pages of spam again. If this forum is going to exist, then it needs people to check in here and take care of things ---- more than once a week.

Comment please?

How does one ban a poster? Does banning a poster remove all the spam they've already posted?

One has to be a moderator, which Walton - the "owner" of this forum - can set you up as. I only wish that banning a poster would automatically delete all of that person's posts, but it does not, the moderator has to click approximately 4 times on each post to delete it.

Makes us appreciate what those poor buggers over on CreateSpace have to deal with Monday morning.

Do you think these are individuals or 'robot' oriented?
If 'robots' are used, I myself have no issue with doing a "reCAPTCHA" to help stop the spammers.
I do it for nearly every other site I use, so why not here as well.
Annoying as it is, I know it is very the great good of the forum.

Interesting observation. I've been logging in several times a day, but say in the afternoon-early evening. For the last few days, I've tried to log in early morning. The two-three days there were 8-12 spams. I deleted them and the member. For the last few days, I've found only 1-2 spams.

I will try to keep this up.

Certainly appear to be being targeted by someone quite determined.

Could you create another section where all the untagged posts get diverted until they can be deleted?

Cheers. Ed
