[Smashwords] What happened?

Post by Phoenix » Sat Jun 03, 2017 5:18 pm

Danwiz and I briefly discussed this issue a while ago. Whatever happened to Smashwords? I published some unedited works with them years ago and managed to get a reasonably constant flow of page views, sample downloads and even sales. Last year, after a long hiatus, I republished my books after having them professionally edited. Nothing! A few page views and that's it. I am not even going to bother publishing my next novel with them. I may just go the KDP select route for my ebook. How do others go with their ebook sales through IS and so forth? Anyone else enjoying success through Smashwords?
Joe.

I've never used Smashwords -- it's always come across to me as a clearing house for otherwise unpublishable works. That may seem snobby, but I've done a lot of research in this area and there are better, more professional companies to work with.

I use KDP, iTunes, and IngramSpark for everything else. I've been really happy with Spark's ebook distribution so far.

The other platform I think shows promise is Pronoun. The only thing holding me back is that they penalise non-US authors with lower royalties. But their advantage is they supply Google Play, which no one else seems to do.

Yes, precisely. And since we've had this discussion, I've had 1 sale through Smashwords, I mean, I have 26 titles with them, about 20 of them are new (submitted within the last six months), and 1 sale in the past quarter. I used to have a lot more sales than that in a 3-month period. I'm also noticing the same thing with KDP - sales over the past 2 or 3 years have been going down and down. I used to have about 5 times the ebook sales that I presently do. Personally, I believe that the ebook "fad" (forgive me, I have a Kindle too) has seen it's "days of maximum" and now just us diehard Kindle users buy and read ebooks. I think that ebook readers and ebooks will continue to see sales, but the days when "everybody" had a Kindle and many people were buying books that sounded good and just telling themselves that "Oh, this sounds cool, I'll buy it now and read it when I get to it." Now they buy books that they are planning on reading "next" and then they read that book next. Then they buy one more. They've learned that putting it on their Kindle does not mean that they will read it in this lifetime!

In regards to Kindle readers (and I include all ebook readers under that term), they will continue to see good sales I believe because people love them for when they are traveling. There is nothing worse than finishing a book and not having another one with you while you're on a long train commute, flight ir vacation that has gotten boring.

I'm not sure you can say that ebooks have had their day of maximum. Actual Kindles maybe, on the grounds that there are Kindle Apps on everything. There'll be a continuous move over from physical books to ebooks for a few years yet.

Oddly, I looked at my Smashwords today, before reading this thread, and I've had a few sales recently. I'm not sure why.

May as well turn this into a "What happened?" thread. I know youre busy, since youve told everyone now, and before, but where are the rest of the mods?

It seemed like this site was really busy for a while and it doesnt seem like half the people are on anymore or at least active. What happened?

I'm still here.

And I can add something to this thread to: I find Smashwords absolutely essential, otherwise how would Colin in Bradford buy my SF?

I'm still here too, checking in every morning to see if there is anything new, but there very seldom is. I too wonder what has happened! It seemed like things were off to a pretty good start, but then things just kind of died.

Not for the spammers. I get at least one every morning.

This group is independent and set up as a tonic to Createspace's spam. If Createspace sorted their act out, then this forum wouldn't exist. All the competent people migrated here, asked their questions and then, satisfied, had nothing else to ask. We're not advertising this group in the Createspace forum or elsewhere as those forums are unhappy about this. So, no newbies to start the conversations off.

We need to recruit more questioners.

I've mentioned this group in our new book on indie publishing, http://punkpublishers.com/, but again, everyone here has already published, knows what they are doing, and even worked out how to join this forum. So, we're not going to sell a book on how to do this to anyone here, are we?
