[TITLE SUGGESTIONS?] In Search of a title

Post by danwiz » Mon Nov 06, 2017 9:53 pm

I previously published this book under the title "Japan Outdoors". Now I want to republish it (2nd edition) with an additional 11 photos. We published three different photo calendars in 2014, one in 2015, one in 2016 and one in 2017, each with Japan Outdoor Photos on each page. Here is one example:
http://amzn.to/2hOO3gx.

These calendars have remained moderately popular even after the year has finished, that is, the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 ones still continue to sell, surely, only for the photos. So, this book should sell, but much to my disappointment, it has only sold three paperback copies and one hardcover copy since October 2015. This book - paperback edition - costs less than two of the calendars, so I believe that people would buy this book instead of the calendars, if they could discover it.

Here is a link to a PDF of the entire NEW edition: http://danwiz.com/Other/CalendarPhotosB ... cent_9.pdf. It's greatly reduced for protection - it's only 2.68 inches x 3.63 inches, so the resolution is really poor. All I'm asking is for you to take a look at it and make a new title suggestion that's more catchy than Japan Outdoors. I would be sure to point out on the cover that "formerly published under the title Japan Outdoors".

Thanks in advance for your time.

Max Ernst, who live out here in AZ and was a good friend of Fred Sommer (the photographer), said a good title is 60% of the work.

Good titles are hard . . . in fact, even bad titles are hard.

You've taken the practical approach, "Japan Outdoors." I prefer a more poetic title for things. My Japanese is very limited, some food and go words. Aji, perhaps too short. Dashi or Okonomiyaki. All would need a subtitle, and that could be Japan Outdoors. You can probably come up with a better word or short phrase. Maybe there is something in English that would do the same thing. I read a long book years ago about naming companies, products etc. It broke things down to persons name (Johnson and Johnson), descriptive (International Business Machine), nonsense words (Kleenex, Exxon), etc. For each one it gave pages and pages of why it was wrong. In the end, I think the lesson was this: it is not the name (although a bad name can hurt, more than a good name can help), rather, it's the marketing.

I note that you're not only using a reduced page size but white streaks . . . obviously, you took my challenge from a year or so ago to heart!

By the way, here is a link to a small collection of thumbnails for my work: http://12on14.us/free/092909_brochure_( ... delson.pdf. One of these days, I'll do a book (there is a collaborative project, Metaphysics in Jars that was published by Nazraeli Press years ago. Also, as long as I am shamelessly flogging my own work (free), The Music of Frederick Sommer: http://12on14.us/free/The%20Music%20of% ... Sommer.zip and a companion booklet: http://12on14.us/free/isles_of_melancho ... delson.pdf

I read it, laughed and told myself that I love it! I'm still thinking though, but I really do love it. Thanks, Joe!

I like to get my inspiration from really meaningful phrases said by truly great people like “Man is born free, but is everywhere in chains”, do you know where I can find thematic compiltaions of those?
