[PRINTING] distressed fonts over color

Post by Kpub » Tue Oct 24, 2017 3:34 pm

MyFonts had a special offer today on True North Textures, a set of fonts of which some are designed to look distressed--sort of like old signs where bits of the paint have flaked off--while others have cross-hatching or other textures.

I expect that all of them would print satisfactorily on a white background, but what would happen on a color background (book cover, for example) in four-color process printing? Would a problem with trapping be likely?

Here's the sample page is at https://www.myfonts.com/fonts/cultivate ... -textures/.

While you can adjust for trapping in programs like InDesign, I find that the "cure" is usually worse than the problem.

Image
  • A is the ideal is, where the blue exactly fill the white cutout.
  • B shows a shift in color where the blue overprints the red.
  • C shows why you might ask about trapping . . . misregistration.
  • D shows the ideal trapping, but there is a slight discoloration of the blue around each letter.
The easiest answer to your question is to set a line of type on a color background and print it. This will give you a basic answer. As for printing with CS, or any commercial printer using conventional screening, you always run the risk of misregistration.

Screening always changes the equation somewhat. But I think your best approach is printing things on your desktop printer: it's CMYK, reflective, etc.

As for how a distressed font might look over color, here is an example:

This has been rasterized, so there is no trapping.
