[CS and INGRAM] Can i publish on both at the same time?

Post by KIALea » Sun Feb 18, 2018 5:35 am

Hello

I'm pleased to say that i am at the upload stage of my book, all proof read and formatted and looking good on the uploader on CS. (except for it appears in the interior viewer with blue ink instead of black which is odd?? Anyone seen this before?

Anyway i am definitely going with Ingram spark, i have bought my own ISBN codes as i understand this is a requirement on IG and they offer better international shipping direct costs.

Can i also go live with POD CS too? I also want to print it in black and white to offer a cheaper POD avenue for those who want my recipes and not so fussed about the full colour.

So basically looking to do the following:
FULL COLOUR MY OWN ISBN CODE - INGRAMSPARK (they will also feature it on Amazon, Aus, Europe, Canadian and USA partners so they say)
FULL COLOUR SAME ISBN AS ABOVE - CREATE SPACE (non expanded distribution as too expensive)
BLACK AND WHITE EDITION DIFF ISBN CODE - CREATE SPACE
KINDLE FULL COLOUR NO ISBN NEEDED?? - KDP PUBLISHING

Is this possible combined?

Thanks in advance! :)

You need to get more ISBN. The same ISBN cannot be used for different editions. Otherwise, you can publish your work simultaneously, with CS and Spark: best in separate editions.

The ISBN is a bibliographic identifier, and it locks together the author, title, publisher, etc. If you different editions, you need separate ISBNs. According to the ISBN Manual:

5. Application of ISBN
5.1 General
A separate ISBN shall be assigned to each separate monographic publication or separate edition or format of a monograph ic publication issued by a publisher. A separate ISBN shall be assigned to each different language edition of a monographic publication.

5.2 Changes to publications
A separate ISBN shall be assigned if there have been significant changes to any part or parts of a publication. A separate ISBN shall be assigned if there has been a change to the title and/or to the sub-title of a publication.
A change to the cover design or colour or to the price of a monographic publication does not require a separate ISBN. Minor changes in an edition (e.g. corrections to misprints) do not require a separate ISBN.
5.4
Publications in different product forms
Different product forms of a publication (e.g., hardback, paperback, Braille, audio book, online electronic publication) require separate ISBNs. Where electronic publications are made available in different file formats each separately available format shall be assigned a unique ISBN. (See section 6.3 for further information on dealing with e-book file formats).

ISBN Manual

This is probably not the answer you were hoping for. CS and Spark will reject a project if the ISBN is not unique to that project.

so my full colour is one same edition, so can i not use the same isbn code for both IG and CS?
then my black and white edition will have a separate isbn code.
And the kindle edition on kdp is telling me an isbn is not necessary but i suppose i could use there own one?

I have 10 isbn codes already purchased foe diff edtions where the colour, content etc changes. but i thought i could use the same isbn for publishing on diff platforms as long as the book is exactly the same?

No, you can use the same ISBN with CS and IS as long as they are the same book: exactly the same content, interior color, title, subtitle, author, physical trim size, cover type, etc. If it's the exact same book, you can use the same ISBN.

So your plan of:
FULL COLOUR MY OWN ISBN CODE - INGRAMSPARK (they will also feature it on Amazon, Aus, Europe, Canadian and USA partners so they say)
FULL COLOUR SAME ISBN AS ABOVE - CREATE SPACE (non expanded distribution as too expensive)
BLACK AND WHITE EDITION DIFF ISBN CODE - CREATE SPACE
KINDLE FULL COLOUR NO ISBN NEEDED?? - KDP PUBLISHING

...is perfectly fine. The only thing I'd like to clear up for you is that you would not be able to use Expanded Distribution with CreateSpace with the same ISBN that you also use at IS, as this would not be acceptable to IS. So it's not a matter of your second line above being too expensive; it's a matter of the fact that the ISBN cannot appear in the Ingram catalogue already or IS will reject it.

fantastic thanks Seisa,

Indeed you are correct that was the other reason I am not going with expanded on CS. I suppose its one or the other. The only reason i am going down the route of CS as well is because i believe, if i have researched correctly that they will show my book always in stock, where as with IG distributing to amazon it may show as a later dispatch date.

Guess i just wait and see how it all looks?

Does anyone know much about Book Depository in AUS / NZ and how i get on there? many people have asked me if my book will be on there.

Amazon owns the Book Depository. Your IS version will show up there.

Sarah is right . . . teach me to answer first thing in the morning. With your own ISBN, you could have a dozen companies print your book.

But what about distribution? If there are two identical editions on Amazon, one printed by Spark and the other by CS, how are they listed? How does someone order one or the other? Is it confusing enough to cost sales? Or would you disable Amazon distribution for one of them?

Sorry for the bad answer.

Walton, when you use the same ISBN with both CS and IS there is only one Amazon listing, because it uses the ISBN. Same ISBN, same book. Amazon just has a choice for fulfillment. Most of the time, they'll source through CS, unless CS production is backed up, like around Christmas. None of this is visible to the end customer. They just see one listing for that edition on Amazon, with one ISBN, and one publisher. The rest is behind the scenes.

If you used two different ISBNs for the same book, like the free CS ISBN and then a purchased one through IS, then Amazon would show two listings, because of the two ISBNs. That's why it's always best to use the same ISBN for the same edition with multiple printers.

Sarah, thank you! I was speculating . . . except as far as the ISBN Manual defines when a distinct ISBN needs to be used.

Perhaps my thinking is clouded by the simple fact that having the same book, same edition, being printed by two different printers strikes me as asking for problems. It is something I would never experiment with, not for me or for a client.
