[CS] CreateSpace - Barcodes

Post by R. C. » Mon Jul 31, 2017 11:21 am

After numerous conversations over the last 3 weeks with varying levels of customer support and relayed data to the technical team. CS has made it clear that there is no option for a custom barcode, whether your barcode scans fine or not, meets the standard etc.

ALL barcodes will be replaced with the CS barcode, one which does not meet the international standard for properly hyphenating the text based ISBN. In addition CS will not be updating the barcode they use to one that meets the standard, though they refuse to give a reason for this decision and will only reply that this is there process.

Despite numerous questions I was provided no technical reason that a properly formatted custom barcode could not be used aside from the fact that they will not make any exceptions to their barcode policy, regardless as to the spec listed that states custom barcodes are accepted. This is not a matter of them being unable to implement custom codes as they have in the past but simply unwilling to do so, regardless of how that appears from a customer service standpoint.

In short - If you want a barcode that meets the ISBN standard on your book use another service.

I have to believe that most everything CS does (or not), at present is all aimed at moving authors to KDP for their print editions. I really doubt there will be much to like about CS as this progresses to its ultimate conclusion. We might even have a possible indicator for when the transition will take place. The more crap that CS comes up with, the closer we are? Even though I hate the thought of paying the set-up fee, and going through the tougher submission process, I will most likely go with IS rather than KDP when it comes. CS will not miss a small timer like me who sells bugger-all books, but I imagine that it will feel the pinch when most of their high-selling authors do the same. Unless KDP cleans up its print edition act really quick, they will lose quite a few to the opposition. Wonder if they will then block IS books from Amazon?

Joe, you should think about joining SPN. You'll never pay another set-up or revision fee at IS ever again. And if I end up doing your covers, you won't have to worry about the "tougher" submission process.

My only issue with IS/LSI is that Amazon insists on placing the ridiculous 1-3 week shipping line on books distributed through them as opposed to In Stock. Another obvious ploy to drive people to their service, regardless of how inadequate it has become. If not for this I would have non of my distribution through CS as Amazon and cheap proofs is all I currently use them for.

Michelle, what is SPN please. I tried Googling those initials, along with various keywords, and came up with no clues.

Thank you R.C., so it appears that this is only for Australian Publishers. Is there a similar one in the USA that I can join so that I no longer have to pay IS setup fees? Do you know?

Michelle, at $90 - $120/annum to join SPN, for a small time writer like me who might release one or two books a year, it doesn't seem worthwhile. I am already spending far more than I making on my books. I can understand the value for someone like yourself with a stable of writers producing many books, but it seems to me I would just be trading one expense for another.

Yep, http://www.ibpa-online.org/.

And I just saw this on their website:

LIMITED TIME OFFER
IngramSpark: Trial Membership (limited time only; promo code required): For first time IBPA members only, this three-month trial membership is available for a limited time to IngramSpark clients. A special promo code, available from IngramSpark, must be used during registration. The IBPA office does not have access to the IngramSpark promo code.

Thanks for that Sarah. I went to IS and through a chat, I managed to get the promotional code and joined the IBPA for free (at least for 3 months). Now I just downloaded the IBPA Members Benefit Handbook and even found the promotional code to allow me to upload new and modified files.

Thanks again!

Edited to add: I just uploaded a revised file and it was, as the IBPA promotion code promised, free!
